What is K12?

Published by wendysue

K12 is a virtual school program expertly designed for students kindergarten through 12th grade, operating independently on a global level, giving parents an alternative to sending their children to public and private schools. It’s the choice of many homeschoolers seeking a quality education at home.

K12 is also the choice for many public school systems, offering charter programs. Using K12 through a public school system means your children are officially enrolled in a state run school, but the parent remains teacher from the comfort of home. There are many benefits to registering with K12 through a public school system, the most obvious being price, but there are some drawbacks as well. The biggest beef most have with this set-up is that you’re subject to public school policies, monitoring, and standardized testing. Although, the degree to which this intrusion is felt, varies from one school district to another.

One of the purposes of this blog is to share my family experiences with K12 and the public school we’re registered with.  So far, we’re still happy with our choice to step away from our largely unstructured homeschool and into a world of structured, teacher-supported, computer tracked assignments and record keeping that adjusts to our schedule and has yet to leave us disappointed.
